Fair Sharing In VISUAL MATHS FRACTIONS — A true Story
One day, a friend of mine went to a take-away shop.
She bought a pizza for her 3 children.
Mum divided the pizza like the following.
But the younger boy was not happy 🙁
“That is NOT fair!” he yelled.
He would not stop crying till my friend and I suggested that the boys swap their shares of pizza, to which they agreed.
I’d already observed how children and even some adults struggle with basic fractions in schools and colleges for years. But this pizza incident became the turning point; I realised how deep the problem with fractions is.
I had to do something there and then.
So, I started sketching and scribbling in children’s exercise books, notepads and on loose sheets of paper. This was very helpful, but repetitive and hard work.
Next, I converted my sketches and scribbles into handout notes and worksheets, to help as many children as possible. But still, this was not enough.
Finally, I turned those notes and worksheets into full books. FRACTIONS VISUALLY™ was born!
